What I’m Watching During Quarantine

I’ve been working from home since March and Chicago was under a full lockdown for months. As a result, like many others I found myself flipping through TV shows more often. Here are my current favorite picks (not Tiger King)!

Netflix

Ozark: My new obsession! I think I binged the entire show in a week. As someone who never got on the ‘Breaking Bad’ train, I was apprehensive about starting this show. The newly released third season was my favorite. If you find the first season slow, don’t worry it picks up. Intricate, dark, sometimes funny and surprisingly heartbreaking.

Dear White People: Clever, witty and a little tongue in check, this show follows a group of black undergrads at a small mostly white liberal arts school and the successes and struggles they endure. Don’t let the title fool you, this show is about being Black.

Black AF: Apparently this show was controversial because it was deemed ‘un-relatable’ when it came out, but I enjoyed it. I binged it in a couple of days. It’s a documentary style show about a wealthy Black family and the dichotomy between the first-world problems and racism they endure. It’s a little silly and over the top, but there are definitely funny moments.

Hulu

Killing Eve: I had heard so many good things about this show I don’t know why it took me so long to start. With two very talented leads, Sandra Oh from Grey’s Anatomy and Jodie Comer whose chemistry jumps off the screen. I will say I enjoyed the first season more than the second. Also I have to add, a great show for fashion lovers. If contract killing doesn’t work out, Villanelle could definitely be a fashion blogger.

Disney+

This is a new addition to our growing list of streaming services. I’ve been really enjoying re-watching some of the Marvel movies I haven’t seen in a while. Avengers: Endgame is also always a fun adventure. If you’e a Star Wars fan the nine films from the trilogy all live on this platform, plus the Mandalorian (hello Baby Yoda!). And of course, Hamilton is now on! I watched that with my family, it took three nights but we made it! I liked the fact that it was a filmed performance, you get the reaction from the live audience but you also get close up visuals of the actors. An interesting take on our founding fathers, this show led to a history lesson about Hamilton and his co-workers.

HBO

Veep: I’m late to the game, but this show is laugh out loud funny. If you liked Parks and Rec, it’s similar but R rated. With the help of a hilarious supporting cast, Julia Louis-Dreyfus navigates her political ambitions as the vice president of the United States.

I Love You, Now Die: I am a fan of documentaries, this is a true crime type of doc but doesn’t fit into the typical ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery. It delves into the case of Michelle Carter, the young woman who was convicted of murder for her boyfriend’s suicide. We heard about the case in the media, but this documentary gives an interesting alternative view of the case, the law and what precedent her conviction could set.

Apple TV

Defending Jacob: This is the main reason why I got Apple TV, it’s most likely going to be a quarantine only subscription. A suburban families’ life is suddenly torn apart when the teenage son is accused of murdering his classmate. Having read the book first, I was curious to see if the show lived up to it’s source material. With twists and turns this show is more than just a murder mystery, it’s also a family drama. Plus who doesn’t like to see Captain America solving a crime!?

See: I will admit, I mostly watched this because of Jason Momoa. AKA the man who should be the sexiest man alive every year. This tells the story of a dystopian future where humans are blind. Momoa is a tribal leader who has to protect two ‘seeing’ children from forces of evil. It’s pretty intense, violent and dark but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Khal Drogo. Alfre Woodard is always a welcome addition.

I’m always open to recommendations and I’m curious to hear about what you are all watching! Leave a comment below with your recs.
